The Voices of Unicity are a monastic order capable of merging their voices with the Unicity network to command the living. Used by the Imperial Cult to control and indoctrinate the population, the Voices were originally missionaries tasked with spreading the word of Unicity across the continent. Highly sought after during the initial colonization, the Voices allowed the Empire to expand without armed invasion.
Since the Ruin and the establishment of the MIR Pact, the Empire has officially had to renounce its expansionist policy and is content with indirect means, such as mercenary companies, to fight its rivals. This context of relative peace has transformed the Voices into a force for maintaining order, feared by the population for their fanaticism.
This misuse of the Voices is a strategy of the Unicity cult to discredit them and assert its authority over this rebellious order. Pre-dating the creation of the imperial religion, the Voices do not recognize its dogma or hierarchy but use the Unicity network without its consent or that of the Fate, to whom this privilege belongs. This practice, heretical to the cult, continues thanks to an ancient edict formulated by Systerin himself.
The first Emperor's decision rewarded the order's loyalty and allowed it to create a counterweight to the future imperial religion. This legacy continues, and even though they are attached to the Cult of Unicity, the Voices are still supported by the Emperor and his followers, who are patrons of their monasteries.
Aware of their central position, the Voices act as mediators between the two institutions and enjoy considerable influence despite the size of their order. This situation is not without its disadvantages, as the Voices, obliged to represent both sides, are forced to submit to the degrading tasks imposed by Unicity. Ironically, being recruited by the MIR is seen by many Voices as a way out and the last means of continuing their original mission.
